Dean, Faculty of Arts and Sciences
The Aga Khan
University (AKU) is a pioneering
institution of higher education
whose mission is to improve the
quality of life in the developing
world and beyond, through
world-class teaching, research
and healthcare delivery. AKU
educates students for local and
global leadership from
campuses and teaching
hospitals in six countries,
primarily in Asia and Africa. It
generates new knowledge to
solve problems that affect
millions of people, especially
the most vulnerable. The
University is a private,
not-for-profit institution
and part of the Aga Khan
Development Network.
AKU is establishing a Faculty of
Arts and Sciences which will
draw on the rich tradition of arts
and sciences education and
infuse it with AKU's distinctive
values. The Faculty of Arts and
Sciences aims to develop
leaders through transformative
education that is endlessly
challenging and intellectually
stimulating — one that prepares
graduates for innovative
thought and consequential
action. The hallmarks of our
graduates will include what we
refer to as the four C's and the
three E's: critical thinking, clear
communication, creativity,
commitment to service,
entrepreneurial outlook,
engagement with pluralism and
ethical action.
Reporting to the Provost, the inaugural Dean, Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS), is a member of the University's senior academic team, and the primary ambassador for the Faculty in the community. This is a unique opportunity to play a central role in setting strategy and overall direction for Arts and Sciences education in the country.
Candidate profile
The ideal candidate will bring outstanding academic qualifications, a record of scholarly achievement in a field related to the Arts or the Sciences, significant administrative and leadership experience, as well as a passion for advancing education, research and scholarship. Exposure to, or experience in, countries with developing economies will be an advantage. A PhD or equivalent in a field of either Arts or Sciences is required, with eligibility for appointment at the rank of professor on selection or soon thereafter.
Scope of responsibilities:
Leadership and Vision: To have demonstrated success as a leader in higher education, by possessing the ability to inspire and mobilise others to achieve exemplary performance and outcomes in education, research, and scholarship.
Administration: Administrative experience in a complex and dynamic academic or research environment, as well as experience in recruiting and mentoring new faculty for success through the tenure and promotion process.
Research, Scholarship and Service: Commitment to a student-focused culture promoting excellence in terms of learning, graduate student training, and the overall experience.
External Relations: Ability to build positive relationships with external organisations and to effectively represent the interests of the Faculty, regionally and internationally. Show commitment to fundraising activities for further expansion of both the Faculty and the University's resource base.
